Step up Your Business Game in 2014

Many people get fed up with hearing the saying ‘New Year, New Me’. Well how about we change this to ‘New Year, New Business’? Ok, so it may not be quite as catchy but it has a great message; this New Year, follow your dreams and start your own business , the other day I was reading in cryptocurrency news an article that says that the construction field is a really good inversion. This may seem like a huge deal and of course it is, with almost 900,000 firms and SMBs in the construction industry, but it could be far easier to get the ball rolling than you think.

Many of us sit at our desks or go out on the road each morning and question why we do our job – whether we’re already in the construction field or not.  Some may answer themselves with the reason that they love their job, or maybe it is to pay the bills. Maybe it is simply the fact that they don’t know what to do next and are waiting for the solution. If you feel that a change is needed, and the industry or position is not right for you, now is the time to act; continuously putting it off will only prolong the process and you may never get to where you want to be.

Discover Your Specialism; Find Your Niche

The first thing to consider is what you will specialise in. You can offer a huge range of services that are within you and your staff’s skillset, but there should always be a selling point that will convince customers to come to you rather than anyone else. As it stands, the construction industry has been booming this last year with more growth than any year since the recession – and demand for workers and firms is at a high.

Maybe you have worked in a particular area of construction throughout your career, or you are an all-rounder when it comes to the industry but have an interest in a certain task that with a bit of effort you could master. Whether it’s a particular part of the construction industry, or you have a strong knowledge of the local area (which could aid with planning regulations and groundwork types, perhaps indicating a need for piling), you will then be able to say that you are a specialist in this area and people within your local region are more likely to come to you for the job to be carried out than perhaps a general construction firm.

The Key Is In The Planning

Create a business plan around this and set yourself targets to work towards, this will help you to keep on track and have elements that will be arranged on time. A vital part that you will need to start the business is the equipment. This could be the main expense when it comes to setting up a business so make sure you are prepared for the financial strain that you could feel at the start.

Access Service & Repair Limited offer used access platforms as well as brand new equipment. Many different types are available and buying used machinery that is assessed and is of the highest standard can save you a huge amount of money. These kinds of costs could really help when it comes to starting your new business venture.

Start Your Promotion Small

After many late nights working out figures and going over details of how to make the business a success, you will eventually find yourself at the point which you are ready to launch. Start small with advertising such as in the Yellow Pages or simply putting leaflets through doors, invest a small amount of money into an online presence and be sure to hit the trade shows, even if your presence is small. This may get you your first customers and once the money for these jobs have been received you will want to put it straight back into the business. This also ensures that, if a particular advertising venture doesn’t work, you haven’t invested large amounts of money early on – giving you more scope to experiment with a variety of formats.

Many professionals within business say that for the first year you should expect to see no profit whatsoever. This is a good milestone to set for how long you should be putting the money back into the business. Investing in more staff, better systems and more equipment will then be possible.

With determination, passion and focus you can make your new business a success.
