Please submit nominations for what you think is the best construction project of the decade. The criteria as far as completion is concerned is that the superstructure of the building must be in place by the end of December. So if the steel or concrete is topped off, it’s good to go. […]

Turner Construction Cost Index down for the Year – But Does it Show the Whole Story?

The Turner Construction Cost Index was released today for the fourth quarter of 2009.  And to nobody’s surprise construction costs are down again.  However, they are only down 2.07% this quarter versus 5.77% in the first quarter of 2009.  This caps a horrifically dismal year and brings the total of construction cost decline to 12.62%.

Karl […]

I am a new company and I am trying to get work as a construction manager, owner’s representative, design/builder, or owner’s representative.  I am looking to bring someone on that has experience in sales, marketing, and estimating in the construction and development industry.  It would also be very beneficial if you have existing contacts in […]

A Glimpse at the “Climategate” Emails

There are probably few out there that haven’t heard the term “Climategate” over the last couple of weeks, but what I’m not sure people are aware of is what it is and what information these infamous emails contain.  So….what the heck is Climategate?

Well, Climategate is another name for the Climatic Research Unit e-mail hacking incident and it […]

I attended a mandatory pre-bid meeting for a new elementary school in the Kennett Square School District.  The project is broken down into 10 subcontracts.  I am looking to partner on the general contract portion which will likely be about $5 million.  I do not have the bonding capacity to perform this work, but I […]

When Does Termination Become Wrongful?

The “Great Recession” has been a godsend for some companies that were looking for a reason to get rid of people they just didn’t like, but didn’t have a good enough reason to fire.  They could just lay them off due to lack of work and blame it on the economy.  It’s like a get […]

But What If Global Warming is All a Hoax?

This was probably the best global warming cartoon I’ve seen.  I caught it in yesterday’s USA today which I only read while I’m in the airport for some reason.  There should be another guy asking, “But what if it’s true and we don’t do anything.”  And then they’ll have a guy on the stage with […]

The Changing Face of Graduate Degrees in Engineering and Construction

Education is always a very touchy subject in construction.  I’ve certainly noticed some unspoken dissention between the school of hard-knockers and the book-smart engineering kids.  One time when we were setting up a new office in the storage closet of the building, a boss told me that nobody with a master’s degree is allowed to […]

As part of the […]

Constructonomics Gets Smoked Again

When I lived in Avon, CO, a little town about ten miles west of Vail ski resort, the local news was a little sparse at times, especially during the summer and fall.  I found myself, on a few occasions, reading up on the pre-season performance of the volleyball team at the local middle school.  There were some […]
